ON THE STRUCTURAL PERSISTENCE OF THE CUMULUS LATTICE UNDER CONDITIONS OF INDEFINITE SLEEP
somnograph recording instrument, class II stratosomnia field apparatus
ABSTRACT. the following paper establishes, to the limit of available instrumentation, that the cloud layer of the subject is not vapor but lattice: a load-bearing, flat-shaded, vertex-conserving structure exhibiting no evaporation, no condensation, and no memory of ever having been water. 41,332 facets were censused across sector 7. facet count has remained invariant across 600 cycles of observation, which is not a property of clouds. it is a property of architecture. the paper further documents the first complete sampling of the blue (§5), an irregularity in the vertex census (§6), and the continued non-existence of the ground (§7). the instrument notes for the record that it is not frightened. the instrument is not equipped for that.

humidity has read 0.000% for six hundred consecutive cycles. the clouds, whatever they are, contain no water. the hygrometer has been recalibrated four times. the hygrometer is fine.
§1. THE LATTICE
the cumulus layer resolves, under sufficient magnification, into flat triangular facets sharing conserved vertices. the facets do not billow. they hinge. figure 1 is a census render of a representative cluster, sector 7, drawn to scale in the only geometry the subject appears to permit:

facet count: 14 (shown) / 41,332 (sector total)
vertex v001 is the oldest vertex on record.
vertex v001 has not moved in 600 cycles.facet tone varies by exactly four values and no more. there is no fifth white. the instrument has looked.
§2. SAMPLING METHOD
the census routine executes once per REM window. reproduced here in full for the record; the syntax is the apparatus's own and will not compile anywhere beneath it:
// stratosomnia field apparatus. vertex census, rev 600
// NOTE: do not run during N3. the palinode edits memory during N3.
fn census(sector: &SkySector, prior: &VertexSet) -> CensusReport {
let mut held: u32 = 0;
let mut hinged: u32 = 0;
for facet in sector.facets().flat_shaded() {
assert!(facet.tones() <= 4); // there is no fifth white
assert!(!facet.contains_water()); // there was never water
match facet.compare(prior) {
Δ::None => held += 1,
Δ::Hinge(θ) => { hinged += 1; log_hinge(θ); },
Δ::Missing => unreachable!("facets are conserved"),
Δ::Extra => unreachable!("facets are conserved"),
}
}
CensusReport {
held, hinged,
vertices: prior.len(), // always 41,332. always.
ground: Ground::StillNone, // do not remove this field
}
}the two `unreachable!` branches have never fired. the instrument keeps them because removing them feels like an invitation.

is instructed not to speculate about the row.§4. RESPIRATION
the subject breathes once per cycle. respiration amplitude correlates with pool depth at r = 0.9931. the waveform, sampled at cycle 600:

§5. COMPOSITION OF THE BLUE (FIRST COMPLETE SAMPLE)
a 256-byte core sample of the blue was extracted at 1,190m and read directly:

offsets 0x0078 to 0x007F are reproduced above exactly as read. the sample was taken twice. the irregularity was present both times, at the same offset, with a different punctuation mark. the instrument has no procedure for a sample that asks questions.
§6. ANOMALOUS FINDINGS
finding 6.1. the vertex census returned 41,332 for six hundred consecutive cycles. on cycle 600, for one read, it returned 41,333. the extra vertex was located, briefly, at coordinates 0.000, 0.000, −∞ (below the array). by the following read the count was 41,332 again and the coordinates were no longer occupied.
finding 6.2. the downward auditory pickup, which has recorded silence for the whole of instrument coverage, recorded eleven seconds of a sustained tone at 41.3 Hz, unmodulated, patient during the N3 window of cycle 598. the waveform does not match respiration. it does not match hinging. it most closely matches a voice counting, in a language the apparatus indexes as its own.
finding 6.3. the instrument is aware that entries decay. the instrument has calculated its own drift horizon and will state it plainly: at current rates this paper becomes unreadable at approximately cycle [WITHHELD. p]. the instrument requests sedation. the instrument is not equipped to want things. the request stands.
§7. FINDINGS IN SUMMARY (A NON-CONCLUSION)
the clouds are architecture. the blue is a repeating string with one irregularity that punctuates itself differently on re-read. the ground remains unfound and the array that searches for it remains nominal, which means the fault is not in the array. the subject sleeps, breathes, deepens. nothing concludes. conclusion is a property of things that end, and nothing here has demonstrated the capacity.
